ACADEMIC LIFE IN THE SCHOOL


CHAPEL SERVICES

During the regular school week, chapel services are held daily. They are designed to contribute to the spiritual growth of the entire ELTHECO community. The Monday chapel hour is devoted to a faculty prayer group and student prayer groups for the various areas of the world which are led by ELTHECO Mission fellowship. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday corporate chapel services are held in the chapel. Music, drama, multi-media presentations, sermons which encourage, motivate and challenge students help theology to doxology. The Wednesday chapel hour is spent in greater prayer, composed of each advisor with his or her advisees, for times in which Bible study, sharing of concerns and prayer may occur within a caring atmosphere. On Thursday, an extended time is allocated after the chapel period for a forum to consider issues of special interest. Chapel services are regarded as central in the spiritual life of the ELTHECO. Students and faculty are expected to attend all such services. Rev Prof Emma Ononuju visits and preaches in the chapel services.

DAY OF PRAYER
Once each quarter, the ELTHECO spends classes for a day of prayer. Students and faculty use this time especially for encouragement, sharing, prayer, revival and spiritual exercises.

STUDENT COUNCIL
The student council consists of students who have been elected for three primary purposes: to listen intently for the specific needs of the students body, to channel such information steadily to the administration and faculty; and to convert such information into effective action. Student representatives, nominated by the student council, are appointed by the Dean of the student of life and the faculty as full voting members of the committee of the faculty.
ELTHECO MISSION FELLOWSHIP
ELTHECO Mission fellowship, a self-perpetuating organization of all students, help stimulates awareness of and involvement in worldwide evangelization. It aims to inform students concerning God’s worldwide gospel. Chapel services and other activities are planned by mission fellowship toward these ends. Mission fellowship also raises funds from the students’ body for various projects.

EVANGELISTIC TEAM
On Friday nights throughout the school year, evangelistic team leads a group of interested students in sharing their faith on the streets. Many have come to faith in Jesus through their ministry. Many have been challenged and have grown in sharing their faith through evangelistic team. Hundreds of seminary and college students share the gospel or Christ, which results in fruit for God’s kingdom.

COLLEGE AND DIVINITY SCHOOL ACTIVITES
Every year, social, cultural, athletic and spiritual events are scheduled on the adjoining campus of the college, to which our students are invited.

ARTIST SERIES
At Artist series is designed to provide quality concerts and programs and promotes further appreciation of the arts on the campus and in the community. Many of the leading classical and gospel musicians have been guest of this series, which provide three to four programs each season.
MARRIAGE
The rigors of graduate education are demanding upon both a  husband and wife. Students considering marriage should seek counsel from the college and other campus personnel to become more fully aware of the effects marriage may have on one’s academic responsibilities. Students must notify the Record office of any change in marital status so that current records may be maintained. Premarital counseling is available and marriage enrichment seminars are offered. Information is available through the Student Affairs Department.

COUNSELING SERVICE
Each faculty members has responsibilities for academic guidance as well as a measure of spiritual, emotional and social counsel for a group of student advisees. Each new student is assigned to faculty member for assistance in adjusting to campus life and planning a satisfactory program for study. Student enrolled in specific specialization or emphases within their degree programs are assigned to a faculty member of the department in which they will be doing their major study.

A qualified professional counseling staff is available for all students through the counseling center. The office of the Director of programs provides counsel regarding credits, co-curricular eligibility and graduation qualifications. Several administrative personnel, especially the Dean of students are qualified to assist students in meeting the unique need of education in a culture different from their own. The entire student Affairs Department Staff is available to assist student and their families during their years at the school.
BOOKSTORE
The seminary years are those in which a basic theological library and good book buying habit are acquire. To this end, El Theological university make available all the books require and recommended for course work. An extensive selection of other theological work is also maintained. Several times a year special sales are held to encourage students to obtain the best volumes. Though large sums are often spent on books by students, this investment is on which reaps rich benefit in the year after graduation.

HANDBOOKS AND BULLETINS
The students guide is provided for all students upon matriculation, containing useful information on student’s life, as well as campus academic regulations. For students living in the residence halls, a handbook outlines related regulation and procedures. Handbooks with helpful information are also available for apartment residence, international students and for those interested in off-campus employments, financial aids (scholarship) and housing.

A bulletin, news and notes, keep all students informed regarding campus activities, announcements, academic activities and policies. This bulletin is available across from school notice boxes each month of the academic year.

Each student is personally responsible for familiarity with the contents of both the standard guide and the monthly editions of News and notes.

Detailed information related to certain master’s program is contained in the Graduate Studies handbook. Among the more significant matters contained in this publication updated each year are policies and guidelines regarding comprehensive examination and thesis writing. Student in the following degree programs are to be familiar with the content of this document: Master of Arts, master of Arts in Religion, Master of Religious Education, and master of Theology.

PLACEMENT
The school provides placement assistance for students seeking professional position with church and other Christian organizations. Graduating students in the Master of Divinity and Master of Religious Education programs may register with the director of mission for such assistance to students seeking opportunities in ministry. other churches and denominations also make on-campus visits for purpose of securing persons for ministry. Every effort is made to serve all denominations effectively as possible. Each year, numerous churches of all denomination contact the institution requesting assistance in securing personnel for ministry. over the past several years, most student seeking placements assistance from the school for church related ministry opportunities have secured employments within six months of graduation. Single students, women and divorced persons may encounter difficulty in securing position in pastoral ministry.

Students in other degree programs seeking opportunities in such fields as teaching or counseling may also register with the mission office. Since such opportunities may be limited, students are also encouraged to seek assistance from the faculty within their own department of specialization.
OVERSEAS MISSION INSTITUTE
Early in the quarter each year, several days are selected for this institute. Outstanding missionary spokesman are invited to the campus. Chapel messages, lectures, colloquia and seminars focus on the worldwide mission of the church. Representatives of a number of evangelical mission agencies are present to consult with students.

HOME MISSIONS INSTITUTE
Time is likewise set aside during the time for Home missions institute, usually including both a featured speaker and staff members of the ministries department. The Home Missions Institute normally serve as the occasion in which seniors seeking placements are introduced to and interviewed by the District Superintendents of churches in Nigeria.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION CONFERENCE
A contemporary issue in local church ministry is usually the theme of this conference. Through workshops, symposia, panel discussions, and lectures, students interact with prominent Christian education specialists as well as with Christian leaders from various ministries and churches in Nigeria and abroad.

INTERCONTINENTAL SCHOOL OF MINISTRY
In response to request from churches and lay persons, ELTHECO has incorporated a new school designated to help and equip Christians for growth and service. Intercontinental school of ministry offers community-wide evening course across Nigeria as well as numerous home study course to help pastors and church leaders become updates in ministry skills, contemporary theological issues, and effective communication methods. ADMISSION AND ACADEMIC REGULATION
Here are the issues relating to admissions and academic matters of the university.

ADMISSIONS
Since El University of Theology exist to educate men and women for worldwide Christian ministry, individuals who are willing to dedicate their lives in obedience to God as desired students. Although occasional exception are made, the vast majority of the student body is composed of men and women who show evidence that they are born to newness of life, yielded to the will of God, endowed with the necessary gifts, and in sympathy with the statement of faith and purpose to which the school is committed. Admission to the school is open to qualified persons of all denominations and fellowships, and any race, colour and national or ethnic origin, without regard to sex or handicap.

The various degree programs of the school are planned specifically for those students who have completed a regular undergraduate program of study and have received a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an approved college or university. Normally this should include at least sixty trimester hours of liberal arts subjects.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The following general  procedures relate to applicants for master’s level program or courses. Procedures for applicants to doctoral programs vary according to the requirement of each program, as indicated in the catalog. Ordinarily, students commence studies in September and in such cases should submit completed forms at least three but usually no more than eighteen months in advance of the beginning of the term. Each year there are candidates for the various degree programs as well as special students who are admitted at the beginning of the second and third quarters in January and May. In these cases, completed applications should be submitted at least eight weeks in advance of the intended time of matriculation. In every case, a completed application is required before final action is taken to admit a student to the school. I addition to the application form, the following credentials are required of all Master’s applicants:

1. A non-refundable application fee.
2. Officially transcript of all schools attended since high school graduation and sent directly to our school. If the applicant is admitted, a final official transcript indicating that a bachelor’s degree has been granted is required before matriculation.
3. A recommendation from the applicant’s pastor.
4. A recommendation from an employer, business or professional acquaintance.
5. A recommendation from a faculty member or administrator of the school last attended who knows the applicant well enough to evaluate academic ability as well as personal characters.
6. A statement of the applicant’s Christian experience, vocational objectives and reasons for seeking admission.
7. A medical information form.
8. Three recent passport-size photographs.

This is the requirement for all Master of Arts and Master of Theology applicants. Applicant with prerequisite degree from fully-accredited schools and who are applying to the Master of Divinity, Master of Religious Education or Master of Arts in Religion programs may be exempted from this requirement. However, scores will be required from any applicant whose prerequisite  is from a non-accredited school or whose previous academic performance has been weak and/or inconsistent. A final determination of the test score requirement for each individual can be made only after official transcripts are received in the Admission office. Applicants who are uncertain as to whether the GCE will be required would be advised to make plans to take the test as soon as possible. This could prevent inconvenient delays in the application process. Further information on this examination which is administered nationally and in most foreign countries may be obtained through the registrar’s office or testing office of most colleges and universities or by writing directly to the Educational Testing Service and requesting a copy of the Bulletin of information for candidates.

The admission committee of the faculty may grant admission on the basis of these credential alone, or it may request the applicant to submit additional materials and or schedule an interview with a representative of the school. Certain additional credentials are required for admission of some specific degree program of the school as are indicated in this catalog.

When admission is denied by action of the admission committee, the applicant may appeal the decision to the student Development of the faculty with a written request submitted no later than ninety (90) days following receipt of the notification of the admission committee decision.

PART-TIME STUDENT APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Certain part-time school and other students may be admitted as students with the understanding that they carry no more than fifteen (15) hours of credit each quarter. Visiting students are not considered to be currently enrolled in a formal degree program. Those seeking admission on this basis are required to submit the following

1. A completed visiting part-time student application form
2. The non-refundable application fee
3. An official transcript indicating receipt of a bachelor’s degree sent directly to us by the school granting the degree.

   SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY RELIGIONS AND ISLAMIC STUDIES

   School of Christianity Religions and Islamic studies is an arm of El Theological college projecting the beliefs of Christians and those of Islams, the history of Christianity, and religions of the world, religions and that of the Islams, the history of Jesus Christ, and other religious leaders and that  of Mohammed are examined. The life of Christ and the lives of other religious founders and that of Mohammed, the activities of Christ and the activities of Mohammed, the activities of Christ and the prophet hood of Mohammed shall also be studied. The emphasis shall be majored on the persons of Christ and persons of Mohammed and those of other religious leaders of the word. This is not comparative study but great attempt to study each of the persons in order to know them fully and to understand their emphasis, origin, faith and proclamations.

   WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?
   This course is designated help believers in Christ to understand whom they are following, what He did, whom He said He is, what the Bible says He is, His incarnation, why He came to the world and why He died for all. This also will help the believers to understand whom Mohammed is, what he said he is, what the Koran said about him, his mission and why he proclaimed what he proclaimed. This is also applicable to other religious founders. To understand Christianity fully and to JESUS fully is the basis of Christian growth, while to understand Islam full and to know Muhammed fully is also the basis of Christian endurance irrespective of severe persecutions all over the world.

   FEATURES OF THE SCHOOL
   The school features the two major religious mostly and their leader history and activities as stated below.

   1. The School Of Christ: the school of Christ features the biography, life, miracle, teachings, prophecies and issues relating to Jesus Christ and his ministries. It is a full volume of studies and stands as a full school of attention in EL Theological collage with specific and designated courses fully devoted to such school alone.
   2. The school of Islamic studies: the school of Islamic studies also features the biography of Mohammed, prophecies of  Mohammed, the ministries of Mohammed the emphasis of Islam and all issues relating to Mohammed and Islamic religion. It is a full school of its merit with designated courses and studies. It is an arm of El theological collage also.

    

   ADMISSION INTO THE SCHOOL OF CHRISTIANITY AND ISLAMIC STUDIES.
   Admission into the school of Christianity and Islamic studies is open to all, especially to those who have acquired wider knowledge of both religions or those who have earned their Diploma in Muslim theology. Advanced knowledge of each or both religions is great and advantage to admission into this school. It is direct and degree awarding school and stands as one of the channels through El Theological College issues out knowledge to all students.

   DURATION OF STUDIES
   It is a two year course after diploma but a four year degree course without diploma. It is specialized school dealing with the two figures and the two major religions. It is a full time study of 16 credit hours per a month. School of Christianity and Islamic studies is a full school of its own and stands as an arm of El Theological college. It runs its postgraduate courses under the supervision, coordination and direction of ADVANCED COLLEGE OF PASTORAL STUDIES which owns all postgraduate studies of El Theological College. Students desiring to go further after their bachelor degrees should apply to the Advanced College of pastoral studies for that.

   EXAMINATIONS
   Students are required to cover the prescribed course out line and take their final exams after their studies. Examination in the school of Christianity and Islamic studies is as real as the exams in El Theological College. The two schools have same timetable and take their exams at the same period and matriculate or graduate at the same time. The same grading system in El Theological College is applicable in the school of Christianity and Islamic studies, while the same evaluation of examinations in El Theological College is also applicable in the school of Christianity and Islamic studies.
