ACADEMIC COLUM I

Academic column is a full course designated for the students of El Theological College that follows the former courses taken by the students. In this academic column, three issues are majored which include the following ones:

1. Biblical studies
2. History and theology
3. Ministry

These courses are the follow up of the previous courses and departments in the website.

The curriculum consists of three major divisions:

1. BIBLICAL STUDIES
2. HISTORY AND THEOLOGY (HT)
3. MINISTRY (MN)

Courses are numbered according to the following classification.

1. Courses whose first digit is 0 do not receive credit in a degree program at the seminaries.
2. Required courses at the 100-200 and 300 level are for juniors, middlers and seniors, respectively. Elective courses indicate the same class levels, but students may take any elective providing they meet the prerequisites set by the instructor.
3. Courses at the 400 level are designated for graduate students in a post M.Div degree program, and therefore require about 50% more work than courses at lower levels. Courses at the 300 level may also be taken for graduate credit when arrangements are made work than M.Div students in 300 level courses.
4. Courses listed with the prefix DM are Doctor of ministry courses and are taken by D.Min. students.
5. Courses listed with the prefix SP are supervised practice of ministry courses and are taken by M.Div. students.

 

Unless otherwise indicated, each course receives three semester hours of credit. The courses below present a reasonably accurate listing of the courses now offered at the schools of theology in ELTEHCO. Courses may not be available in every instance precisely as they are described here. Prior to registration each trimester a book is made available to students with one page descriptions of objectives, content and requirements of each course being offered in the coming trimester in Eltheco Nigeria.

DEPARTMENT OF ETHICS AND BIBLICAL STUDIES
BI 003-004 NEW TESTAMENT GREEK: Elementary New Testament Greek. Class work and tutorial help designed to prepare the student for exegetical work.

BI 100 HEBREW I: An introduction to the grammar, vocabulary and syntax of Biblical Hebrew.

BI 101 BEGINNING BIBLICAL HEBREW: An introduction to the grammar, vocabulary and syntax of biblical Hebrew.

BI 102 GREEK I: BEGINNING NEW TESTAMENT: An introduction to the grammar and syntax of New Testament Greek. Selections from Biblical writings will be read.

BI 103 HEBREW II: SAMUEL AND KINGS (EXEGESIS): Continuation of Hebrew grammar and syntax study. Exegesis of selected Biblical Old Testament readings.

BI 104 GREEK II: MARK (EXEGESIS): This course is designed to expand the student’s knowledge of the grammar and syntax of N.T. Greek and introduce the student to N.T exegesis.
Prerequisite: Greek I.

BI 105 BIBLE BIOGRAPHY: A careful study of the origin and history of each book of the Bible with special attention to the date the author the place of writing and the purpose of writing with greater emphasis on its benefits to the church.

BI 106 CHRISTIAN PHILOSOPHY: This is a critical view to the mysteries of the Christian beliefs with greater emphasis to the salvation from sins, resurrection, rapture, life after death atonement through Christ death, the trinity and other important beliefs of Christian which are not in other religions of the world and which are great surprise to other religions.

BI 115 BIBLE MYSTERIES: A Biblical and spiritual new on the Revelations and inspiration of the Bible with a deeper view on its authority and divine origin.

BI 107 BIBLE ANTHROPOLOGY I
An introduction to Bible peoples, tribes, activities, lives, trades, crafts and religions of the ancient peoples of the Bible days, with deeper interest to evaluate them with today’s life and faith.
BI 108 BIBLE SOCIOLOGY
This is a deep study on the social lives of the ancient Israelities with concentration on their social and religious activities, coupled with their understanding on ceremonies.

BI 114 BIBLE PSYCHOLOGY
This course tends to study the reasoning, the behaviours and the thoughts of the ancient Hebrews, coupled with their ideologies about the natural and divine events under the sun.

BI 116 SCRIPTURE SCIENCES
This course compares the sciences with the Bible histories, events and creation records of the Bible. It helps the believers to see the accuracy of the Bible.

BI 109 ECCLESIASTICAL LATIN
Readings in the Latin vulgate and Latin church fathers for students who have already completed elementary Latin.

BI 111 BIBLICAL STUDIES I
An introduction to the content, historical background, canon, theological motifs and major critical problems of the Old Testament.

BI 113 OLD TESTAMENT CONTENT
In this course the content of the Old Testament books from Genesis to Malachi are studied. The students prepare outlines and/or digests of every book. The books are studied against the historical background. Open to everyone.

BI 115 READINGS IN CONTENT, GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY OF THE OLD TESTAMENT
A self study program under faculty direction in which mastery of Old Testament geography, history and content is the goal. Students will trace events, highlight places and record names in the student map manual.

 

BI 150 BIBLICAL STUDIES II
An introduction to the content, historical background, canon, theological motifs and major critical problems of the New Testament.

BI 151 A SURVEY OF NEW TESTAMENT CONTENT
The primary objective of the course is to gain basic knowledge of the English New Testament. This course may also aid in preparation for the Bible content examination.

BI 153 NEW TESTAMENT CONTENT (MODULE)
A careful reading of the New Testament books to gain a knowledge of their content and historical context.

BI 161 EXEGETICAL READINGS IN GREEK NEW TESTAMENT
Translation of texts to gain facility in the use of the Greek Testament. Grammatical studies, vocabulary building.

BI 190 INTRODUCTION TO EXEGESIS (ENGLISH)
An introduction to the exegetical method, using various Biblical passage (English) as examples.

BI 201 BIBLICAL ARAMAIC
Introduction to the language with readings in Daniel and Ezra. Prerequisite: Biblical Hebrew.

BI 202 READINGS IN NEW TESTAMENT GREEK (MODULE)
Offered each trimester for students not enrolled in a Greek exegesis course. Attention is given to translating texts from the New Testament and to grammatical issues as they arise. It meets one hour each week during a semester.

BI 204 READINGS IN BIBLICAL HEBREW (MODULE)
This module is offered each term and is designed to help students develop their skill in translating Hebrew and building vocabulary. It meets one hour each week during a trimester.

BI 210 WOMEN IN THE BIBLE
Biblical reading on the place of women in the Old Testament, the attitude of Jesus toward women and St. Paul’s views on women. Prerequisite: Biblical studies I & II.

BI 211 PENTATEUCH
Survey of the contents and theology of the first five books of the Old Testament. Introduction to exegetical methods, historical background, use in the church.

 

BI 212 FORMER AND LATTER PROPHETS
Introduction to the contents, historical background, canon, theological motifs and other introductory problems of Joshua, II Kings and the prophets.

BI 213 THE WRITINGS
Introduction to the contents, theology and religious value of the 13 books making up the writings: the third section of the Palestinian canon.

BI 216 BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGY (MODULE)
A study of archaeology to note its contributions to understanding the history, culture and religions of the ancient biblical world.

BI 225 EXEGETICAL READINGS IN HEBREW OLD TESTAMENT
Translation of texts to gain facility in the use of the Hebrew Old Testament. Grammatical studies, vocabulary building.

BI 108 BIBLE DELIVERANCE
This course defines the old testament view of deliverance and the New Testament view of salvation and compares the two to bring out its original meaning to students.

BI 110 CHARACTERS IN GENESIS
This course examines the chief or major characters in the book of Genesis with emphasis to the lives of Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.

BI 112 CHARACTERS IN THE PENTATAUCH
This course, examines the piety, character and life challenges of the people of the law, the Israelities of between Exodus and Deuteronomy with greater emphasis to the lives of Moses, Aaron, Mirrian, Joshua, Celeb and others who lives inspire the Christians.

BI 117 CHARACTERS IN THE DAYS OF JUDGES
This course examines the characters in the day of the judges and seek to use their piety to build the students, with greater emphasis on the lives of Gedeon, Samuel, Jephta, Samson, Ruth, and others of higher life qualities.

BI 205 CHARACTERS IN THE DAYS OF THE KINGS
This course examines characters in the days of the kings with greater emphasis on the lives of kings Saul, David, Solomon, Hezehiah, Uziah, Jehoshephat and others of inspiring qualities.

BI 217 CHARACTERS IN THE DAYS OF PROPHETS
This course examines the major characters among the prophets with greater emphasis to the lives and qualities of Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, Daniel and Ezekiel.

BI 218 HISTORY OF THE MAJOR PROPHETS
This course examines the history and deep biography of the major prophets with great insight to their  biological roots and early lives before their ministries.

BI 227 PSALMS IN ISRAEL’S LIFE
Literary structure and theology of selected psalms. Exegesis directed toward preaching, teaching and counseling. Hebrew desirable.
BI 229 JOB (MODULE)
Studies in the book of Job to determine its issues and theological themes.

BI 230 JOB
A study of its dramatic structure,, its theological problems, its place in Wisdom literature and its impact on contemporary literature.

BI 231 JEREMIAH
A critical study of the life, time, composition and message of Jeremiah, and the influence of the prophetic book on subsequent Jewish and Christian thought.

BI 232 BOOK OF EZEKIEL
Historical and literary background will be studied. The main emphasis will be upon selected passages which will be considered as to their meaning and relevance in contemporary Bible study and preaching Jewish and Christian thought.

BI 233 HOSEA (EXEGESIS: HEBREW/ENGLISH)
The book will be read in Hebrew with special attention given to its historical context and its main themes. Prerequisites: Biblical studies I, Beginning Hebrew.

BI 240 BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICS
A brief history of the interpretation of scripture. Various methods are studies with special attention paid to presuppositions. Prerequisities: Biblical studies I and II.

BI 241 OLD TESTAMENT THEOLOGY
A thorough review and reading of the Old Testament theologies and probes into and reflections on contemporary methods of doing Old Testament theology. Prerequisites: Biblical studies I.

BI 245 HERMENEUTICAL METHOD
Required, middler focus week

BI 250 WORLD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
A study of economic, political, social and religious characteristics of the Greco-Roman world in which Judaism and earliest Christianity developed.

BI 262 MARK
A detailed exegesis of selected portions of the Greek text.

BI 263 LUKE-ACTS
A literary sociological, historical and theological examination of Luke’s contribution to early Christian literature. Exegesis of selected passages (Fulfills the exegetical requirement).

BI 264 EXEGESIS LUKE- ACTS
A study of the Biblical unit Luke-Acts which designed to develop skills in exegesis and expository preaching.

BI 265 JOHANNINE STUDIES
Historical-critical exegesis of texts in John’s Gospel and epistles to determine their characteristic witness to Christian faith and life.

BI 266 MATHEW
A study of the Gospel as a whole and selected texts, designed to develop skills in exegesis and interpretation of periscopes for preaching and teaching.

BI 267 JESUS
Survey of the current literature on the life of Jesus and exegesis of selected texts dealing with Jesus life and death, his teaching and the accounts.

BI 268 THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW
Study of the Gospel of Matthew emphasizing its Jewish background, its Judeo-Christian ethical and theological teaching. The course will develop skills in both exegesis and expository preaching.

BI 269 PARABLES
Survey of current literature on the parables and exegesis of parabolic texts in the Gospel.

BI 219 HISTORY OF MINOR PROPHETS
This course surveys the origin and biographical links of the minor prophets with greater insight to their early family lives, family root and their activities before their ministries.

BI 220 CHARACTERS IN THE GOSPELS
This course examines the major characters in the four gospels whose lives inspire the believers with greater focus to the lives and characters of John the Baptist, Peter, James and John, Mary Magndalyn, Mary the mother of Jesus, Zachariah and Elizabeth, Joseph the husband of Mary, Ann the prophetess, Zachaus, Nichodemus and Martha.

BI 221 Characters in Acts of the Apostles
This course examines the lives and activities of the key players of the acts of the Holy ghost also called the ACTS, with deeper view to the lives of Peter, John, James, others with notable characters.

BI 222 BIBLE CHARACTERS IN EPISTLES
This course features Bible characters in the epistles whose lives and histories shall be studied, which include people like Peter, Paul, Timothy, Titus, John, Jude, James and Philemon.

BI 223 BIBLE INFORMATION
Bible information is the revelation of the key notes, key points, key histories and major events that are recorded in our Bible with major emphasis on their significance to the gospel.

BI 224 BIBLE LANDS AND MAPS2
Bible lands and maps are the proper showcasing of the lands, places and areas where the Bible Heroes and characters lived and where all the Bible life took place.

BI 270 PAULINE CORPUS
Lecture course on the main themes of Paul’s theology with six major works require.

BI 271 NEW TESTAMENT LETTERS
A study of Paul’s writings with particular attention to the form and structure of the letter as a genre of biblical literature.

BI 272 ROMANS (EXEGESIS)
This course will emphasize both the content and theology of the letter, as well as the proper exegetical method to be used in approaching Paul’s works. Fulfills N.T. exegetical requirement. Prerequisite: Bib. Studies II.

BI 274 JOHN (EXEGESIS)
A study of the gospel and epistles of John designed to develop skills in exegesis and expository preaching.

BI 275 MARK (EXEGESIS)
A survey of current thought concerning Mark with exegesis of key passages.

BI 280 REVELATION (EXEGESIS/ENGLISH)
The historical background and critical problems of the Apocalypse, with exegetical theological analysis of specific passage. Discussion of the topics: preaching from Revelation, preaching the book of Revelation,  how revelation can inform our theology.

BI 290 THE BATTLE FOR THE BIBLE (MODULE)
A hard look at the issues involved in understanding and interpreting the Bible today. The course will include analysis of the exegetical and interpretive methods of the Electronic church as represented.

BI 297 INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY (MODULE)
Participants will practice one or more methods of small group Bible study usable with lay persons in parish and other situations.

 

 

BI 321 STUDY TOUR OF ISRAEL
Participants in this annual study tour of Israel leave a couple of days after Christmas and return in mid-January. Readings are assigned prior to leaving and written assignments based on reading and travel experiences are to be completed before the close of the January interim. A faculty member serves as instructor and tour leader.

BI 330 GENESIS 1-24
Introduction to Genesis, with detailed exegesis of selected portions of the Hebrew text of chapters 1-24.

BI 333 AMOS (MODULE)
A detailed study of the contents of the book of Amos to observe genre, structure, issues and theological themes. Hebrew prerequisite.

BI 334 HOSEA (MODULE)
A detailed study of the contents of the book of Hosea to observe genre, structure, issues and theological themes. Hebrew prerequisite.

BI 335 ISAIAH 1-12
Introduction to the composition and theology of Isaiah 1-12, with detailed exegesis of selected texts.

BI 336 JEREMIAH
A study of the contents of the Book of Jeremiah designated to develop deeper understanding of the prophet’s message and ministry in the critical period of Judah’s history in which he lived.

BI 337 MICAH (MODULE)
A detailed study of the contents of the book of Micah to observe genre, structure, issues and theological themes. Hebrew prerequisite.

 

 

BI 338 ECCLESIASTES (EXEGESIS)
Hebrew exegetical studies in the text, with readings and discussions of the book’s place in the wisdom tradition, and major themes. Prerequisites. Biblical studies I and beginning Biblical Hebrew.

BI 225 OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGY 2
This course has to do with the arrangements, dates, events and total chronology of the old testament Bible, from Genesis to Malachi.

BI 251 NEW TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGY 2
This course has to do with the dates, events writings, arrangements, compilations and the total chronology of the new testament Bible from Matthew to the book of Revelation.

BI 252 HISTORY OF JESUS APOSTLES
This history of Jesus apostles helps the church to uphold her foundation. This course therefore features the lives, activities, death and the final works of the apostles of Jesus which help us to uphold our convictions.

BI 253 HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH BIBLE
This course treats, how we got our English Bible and the benefits we have since the emergency of the English Bible. This course will help the students to trust their Holy Bibles.

BI 254 JEWISH CALENDAR
This course unveils the Jewish calendar of activities and outlines some Jewish events and to compare all with the gospel of our lord. This is a faith building course among us.

BI 255 LAWS OF THE BIBLE
This is the course that traces all laws in the Bible and compares their significance with the gospel of our lord Jesus and the grace that appeared to all men.

BI 256 BIBLE PRAYERS
This course has to do with all prayers recorded in the Bible with emphasis to the faith of the people the effectiveness of the prayers and God’s responses to such petitions and action. This is a motivational course for the students.

BI 341 OLD TESTAMENT THEOLOGY
Selected theological themes. The results of critical methodologies and history of Israel’s religious development will be used in seeking to understand the voice and work of God in the national life of ancient Israel.

 

BI 344 OLD TESTAMENT PERICOPES
Exegesis of selected designated for the church year. Preparation of sermons and Bible studies.

BI 346 RELIGIOUS IDEAS IN INTERTESTAMENTAL PERIOD
Introduction to Jewish history and literature in the period 200 BC to 50A.D and detailed study of some important religious concepts of that literature.

BI 360 THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS
A study of the outstanding teachings of the synoptic gospels and the critical problems raised in connection with them.

BI 361 THE EASTER PERICOOPES (MODULE)
This is an exegetical study of the lectionary readings for the season of Easter, with particular attention to the gospel readings and to the task of preaching. The course is offered in February with the study of the readings for the following Easter season.

BI 364 FOURTH GOSPEL
A literary, historical and theological interpretation of the Johannine gospel.

BI 371 PHILIPPIANS (EXEGESIS)
An exegetical study of Philippians, the letter which shows the Apostle Paul at his most mature state of faith understanding and thought.

BI 375 ROMANS
A study of the background, rhetorical structure, and theology of Paul’s letter to the Christians at Rome.

BI 376 PAUL’S CORINTHIANS CORRESPONDENCE
A brief introduction to the Pauline literature followed by a study of the selections from the Greek text of the Corinthian letters.

BI 377 GALANTIANS
A detailed exegesis of the Greek text of Galatians.

BI 381 HEBREWS (EXEGESIS)
An exegetical study of the letter to the Hebrews and its major theological themes.

BI 383 JAMES
A detailed exegesis of the Greek text.

BI 384 I PETER
A detailed exegesis of the Greek text.
BI 388 NEW TESTAMENT PERICOPES
Exegesis of the Greek text of selected New Testament periscopes from the lectionary, with special emphasis on the consideration of the meaning of these texts for the faith and life of the church today.

BI 392 NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY
Using recent new testament theologies, a study of important theological themes in the new testament.

BI 399 READINGS AND DIRECTED RESEARCH
Independent reading or a research project on some phase of biblical study with the approval and under the guidance of one of the instructors in the division.

BI 432 ISAIAH 40-66
A study of major themes in Isaiah (creation, redemption, servanthood, eschatology, universalism) in the context of their historical setting and in the light of their importance for Israel and for the Christian church.

BI 444 THEMES IN BIBLICAL THEOLOGY
Major Biblical themes in the Old and/or new testament such as covenant, justice, land, Messiah, women, people of God, poor, evil, life after death, will be investigated and considered and they relate to contemporary faith church and mission.

BI 494 PORTRAYALS OF JESUS AND THE CHURCH
This course will explore the question, “How does the ‘Historical Jesus’ investigation help us evaluate images of Jesus which have been and are influential in the church.

BI 496 THE BIBLE IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH
The course objective is to consider how the Bible is used and misused in the life of the church in relationship to such areas as ethics, preaching, worship, pastoral care, mission.

BI 499 READINGS AND DIRECTED RESEARCH
Independent reading or a research project on some phase of biblical study on the advanced level with the approval and under the guidance of one of the instructors in the division.

BI 281 BIBLE ETHICS 2
This course has to do with the mode of conduct, disciplined life, character and behavior as were outlined in the Christian Bible which were the lives of Bible Heroes past.

 

BI 282 CHRISTIAN ETHICS 2
This course is on the normal conduct, life, action, speech, exposure, behavior or even character expected by every born again christian. This course tends to bring Christians under control and under disciplined life.

BI 283 PASTORAL ETHICS 2
This course is on the duties, businesses, ministries and pulpit of the pastor and all his actions, conducts, characters, behaviours and relationship towards all in order to present Jesus who sent him.

BI 284 GOSPEL ETHICS 2
This is the conduct, manner, life style, the way and the mode that the gospel should be represented, presented and conducted. It is also on how the gospelers should behave in order to attract the sinners to repentance.

BI 362 MINISTERIAL ETHICS 2
This course has to do with the way, the manner and the method on how the gospel ministries should be conducted to avoid stains and all unwanted pollutions. It is the ministry centered course that helps the minister to know the DOS and the DONTS of ministry.

BI ECCLESIASTICAL ETHICS
This has to do with the life, spirituality, emphasis, conduct, activities and programmes that mark a church or what makes a congregation the church of Christ. This course is the church of God ought to be.
