A survey of the history of the Christian church from its origin at Pentecost to the period of medieval Christendom.

HT 102 THE REFORMATION AND MODERN CHURCH
A survey of the history of the Christian church throughout the non-African world from the decline of medieval chrsitendom through the reformation to the present.

HT 103 FOUNDATIONS OF HISTORICAL THEOLOGY
An introductory survey from 100 AD to the beginning of the reformation focusing on the context and the content of doctrinal formation as well as the methodologies of church history and history of doctrine. (Required Junior)

HT 126 INTRODUCTION TO NATIVE AFRICAN CHURCH HISTORY (MODULE)
This course traces the history of missionary efforts in Africa from the colonial period until today. Short sections on Catholics, orthodox and protestant missions will be discussed. Also included is the partnership of the native. Government and the churches in their desire to civilize and Christianize the people of Africa.

HT 140 INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTIAN FAITH
Students in this course will be introduced to the foundations of the christian faith. Areas of particular attention will be revelation, authority and scripture. Issues of theological method will be discussed from varying traditions with special attention paid to classical and contemporary theologians such Augustine, Anselm, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Schleiermacher and Karl Barth.

HT 150 SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY
This course will examine God’s multifaceted activity in the history of salvation with an eye to its unity. It will explore the christian interpretation of the relationship between God, humankind and the world in a history that extends from creation and fall to the consummation of all things and that centers in Jesus Christ. (Required, Juniors).

HT 156 THE PERSON AND WORK OF JESUS CHRIST
This course concern the main themes in christology and soteriology. Special attention will be given to the doctrine of the trinity, the historical controversy on the two natures of Christ, contemporary attempts to reformulate the Christological mystery; the vicarious substitutionary atonement and the relation of justification and sanctification.

HT 210 LUTHERAN HERITAGE
Lutheranism’s roots in the theologies of Luther and Melanchthon, the book of concord and the period of Orthodoxy in comparison with selected documents of the Calvinist and Catholic reforms. (Required middlers)

HT 211 THE REFORMED TRADITION
A survey of the history of the reformed tradition from Zwingli and Calvin to the present, including the doctrine, creeds, confessions and polities of the puritans, Presbyterians, Congregationalists and related denominations.

HT 212 PRESBYTERIAN CONFESSIONS
An examination of the Book of confessions of the united Presbyterian church and related materials, with particular attention to what it means to be an active church members in the reformed tradition in contemporary society.

HT 214 ISSUES IN/BIBLICAL AUTHORITY
Contemporary controversies over the nature of the Bible and its interpretation have left many people confused. This course seeks to help students clarify their understandings of biblical authority and appropriate methods of scriptural interpretation. Opportunity is given to read a wide spectrum of literature about scripture so various viewpoints might be understood.

HT 215 CREEDS AND SACRAMENTS
Christians are periodically driven to proclaim the right and relevant meaning of the gospel in a confession or creed. All Christian (and particularly Presbyterian) churches find themselves occasionally so engaged. This course probes what such declarations are supposed to do and actually do for church members in life and worship. Among other doctrines, the sacraments will be particularly emphasized.

HT 218 LIFE AND THOUGHT OF JOHN KNOX
The study of John Knox, his career, theology, politics and critical role in the Scottish and continuing European protestant reformation. Readings will include Knox’s five dialogues with Mary Queen of Scots, newly translated by the course instructor.

HT 101 HISTORY OF PENTECOST
This is the course that traces the history, origin and the significance of the Pentecost and compare all with our present day christian experiences in relation to the Holy ghost.

HT 104 THE HISTORY OF CANON
This is the course that tells how we got our Bible, how the inspiration was judged and how the authors were evaluated coupled with its compilation by church fathers.

HT 105 HISTORY OF ISRAEL I
This course tells the history of Israel nation, beginning with the settlement of the family of Jacob in Egypt,, down to the settlement of the same people in the land of Canaan (Palestine). BC 2200-1500).

HT 106 HISTORY  OF THE PASSOVER
The history of the Passover is an academic course that traces the history, purpose and the significance of the Passover as was seen in the Bible and compare the same with the new testament salvation.

HT 107 CHRISTIAN IN AFRICA
The course is on the impact, spread and the initial steps of Christianity in Africa at the early life of the church. This is purely a deep history that may be compared with the present movement of Christianity in Africa.

HT 108 THE CHURCH OF THE FIRST CENTURY AD
This is the history of the church of the apostles, down to the era of the church fathers after the apostle and during the compilation of the entire Bible.

HT 109 THE CHURCH FATHERS
This course traces the activities and the efforts of the church fathers, their contributions to our faith and their diligence in spreading the gospel.

HT 220 AFRICAN CHURCH HISTORY
A study of the development in North Africa of various churches and religious bodies with attention to the social and intellectual influences on their life and thought.

HT 221 UNITED METHODIST STUDIES
A study of the history of the United Methodist Church in relation to its antecedent Methodist groups and the worldwide growth of the Wesleyan movement.

HT 222 HISTORY OF THE ALC (MODULE)
An in-depth study of the several traditions that merged into the ALC in 1960 and of its subsequent history, with background lectures and investigations by the student of one of the following traditions.

HT 231 HISTORY OF WORSHIP (MODULE)
A survey of the development of Christian communion liturgy with special focus on Lutheran worship forms the reformation to gain an overview of liturgical history and to discern the theology and piety the rites express.

HT 234 HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE (ATONEMENT)
An introduction to the history of Christian thought concentrating upon selected leading theologians and themes.

HT 236 CULTS AND SECTS
The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to religious movements outside mainstream Christianity which have attracted a considerable measure of support in our time. We shall make clear where these movements deviate from the traditional understandings of the faith but also where the church today can learn from their contributions. The approach will be both appreciative and critical. The student will be asked to study the basic documents of the principal.

HT 239 THE ECUMENICAL MOVEMENT
Studies in the growth of the concept and practice of unity in the Christian church. Special emphasis will be placed upon developments and leading personages from 1910 to the present. Contemporary problems and opportunities also be considered.

HT 240 CHRISTIAN LOVE (MODULE)
An introduction to the contemporary theological discussion of the meaning of Christian love. Anders Nygren’s monumental work Agape and Eros will form the background for the discussion. An examination of the relation of love and justice also will be included.

MN 248 CULTURE, PERSONALITY AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS
This colloquium explorers cultural, social, emotional and neurological forces that inform one’s religious beliefs. Self examination, analysis and integration of life data with personally held beliefs are the goals.

HT 250 GOD IN PHILOSOPHY AND THEOLOGY
This course seeks to introduce the student to how the great philosophers and theologians of history understand the nature of God, His attributes, His relation to the world, the knowledge of God and the problem of evil. Among philosophers and theologians who will be covered are: Plato, Aristole, Plotinus, Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, Hegel, Kierkegaard, Whitehead and Karl Barth.

HT 252 DOCTRINE AND HYMNODY (MODULE)
The central focus will be on the doctrinal orthodoxy of the hymns used in worship, formal and informal; the place of the hymn in the liturgy and worship and its importance as a medium of proclamation of the gospel. Hymns will be chosen from ecumenical hymnals and books of worship.

HT 253 METHODIST STUDIES: DOCTRINE
A study of doctrine and the doctrinal standards of the Methodist church with particular emphasis on the theological task as outlined in The Book of Disciple.

HT 256 CHRISTOLOGY
This course will explore the Christian interpretations of the person and work of Jesus Christ and what it means for that to become a reality in human life.

HT 262 ECCLESIOLOGY AND ESCHATOLOGY
This course seeks to examine the doctrines of the church and the last things. The section on ecclesiology will deal with the divine and human aspects of the church, the role of the church in salvation, the classical and practical marks of the church, and the sacraments – holy baptism and the Lord’s supper. The section on eschatology will focus on the kingdom of God, immortality.

HT 110 AFRICAN PHILOSOPHY
African philosophy includes all forms of African ideology, beliefs, thoughts, culture and all African world view. This shall be compared with the Christian idea of life.

HT 111 HISTORY OF ONONUJU’S MINISTRIES
This history of Ononujus ministries is an insight to the births of El Emancipation ministry, Redemption campaigners mission, El Theological college, international institute of missions, compassionate women outreach ministries, Global prayer link, Uju Gospel publications and El university of Theology and Biblical seminary.
HT 112 THE MISSIONS OF UJU INTERNATIONAL GOSPEL MINISTRIES
Uju international gospel ministries are the gospel ministries established by Rev Prof Emma Ononuju and his wife Rev Mrs. (DR) Alice Zuriel Ononuju which include Redemption campaigners mission, El Emancipation ministry, El Theological College, International institute of missions, compassionate women outreach ministries, Uju Gospel publication, Global prayer link and El university of Theology and Biblical seminary. The purpose of this course is to help the students to respond to the call without doubt and fear.

HT 113 AFRICAN THEOLOGY
This course traces the beliefs doctrines and practices of some tribes in Africa with a long historical pictures of their faith and practices. This is also called local theology.

HT 263 THE SACRAMENTS
In this course students will become acquainted with the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s supper. Questions surrounding the sacraments will be addressed from the disciplines of biblical studies, historical and systematic theology and preaching.

HT 264 THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT: BAPTISM, CONVERSION AND PENTECOST
This course will offer an in-depth historical and theological analysis of the doctrine of Holy Spirit baptism. The relation of spirit and water baptism, the meaning of conversion, the current charismatic renewal and spiritualistic movements in the past will occupy much of our attention. The roots of the Pentecostal revival in Catholicism also will be explored. An attempt will be made to build bridges between Holiness Pentecostal theology and reformed theology.

HT 266 THEOLOGY OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE: PRAYER, CONVERSION AND SAINTHOOD
An examination of spirituality in the history of the church with special emphasis on the reinterpretation of spirituality by the protestant reformers. A comparative analysis will be made of mystical spirituality and the prophetic, biblical spirituality rediscovered by the reformation. Special attention will be given to the life of prayer, the meaning of conversion and the doctrine of the saints. An attempt will be made to build bridges between the catholic understanding of sainthood and the Evangelical conception of holiness.

HT 271 THE THEOLOGY OF JOHN WESLEY
A study of the life and teachings of John Wesley, his sermons and writings, the hymns of his brother Charles, and the contemporary significance of Wesley for the theological task.

 

 

HT 272 THE CHRISTIAN WITNESS IN A SECULAR AGE (PART I)
This course examines the attempts of various contemporary theologians to reappraise and restate the Christian witness in a secularized culture. In this first section, attention will be focused on Christian evangelism, ministry and Christian witnessing in last days.

HT 273 THE CHRISTIAN WITNESS IN A SECULAR AGE (PART II)
This section of the course continues the discussion of how various theologians try to relate to the challenge of secularism. The theologians considered in this section are Paul Tillich, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, J.A.T Robinson and Harvey Cox. With the exception of Bonhoeffer all these men seek to reinterpret the apologetic task so that the faith might be made credible to contemporary man.

HT 274 THEOLOGICAL INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR
Prerequisites for this seminar are HT 150W and HT 256W. students are engaged in working out their own theological stance, periodic writing assignments toward the formulation of a final integrative paper will be critiqued by the members of the seminar under the guidance of college staff.

HT 276 CALVIN’S 1536 ‘INSTITUTES’
This module introduces students to the thought of John Calvin. The text studied is the 1536 institutes, the earliest edition of that work. Reference to later development in Calvin’s thought will be made and the relevance of his views for today will be examined.

HT 277 READINGS IN THEOLOGY (MODULE)
The writings of various ancient and modern theologians will be read and discussed. The material read will vary from term to term, and the course may be repeated. The theologian and the material to be read will be announced each term.

HT 282 CHURCH AND STATE
Secular and ecclesiastical thought concerning church and state and their respective functions, including the effect of the constitution upon religion in Nigeria.

HT 284 CARIBBEN THEOLOGY, SLAVERY AND COLONIALISM
An attempt to discern the indigenous ways of conceptualizing the presence and act of God among the oppressed and suffering during the history of slavery and colonialism in the Caribbean.

HT 501 THE CONSTITUTION OF THE REDEMPTION CAMPAIGNERS MISSION
This course shall survey and review the manual constitution of the Redemption Campaigners mission. The emphasis shall be on its holiness standards doctrines and the ministers life style outline in it.

 

HT 502 HISTORY OF REDEMPTION CAMPAIGNERS MISSION
This course shall study the vision and history of Redemption campaigners mission, with a focus to discover the vision that gave birth to that great church. This is a motivational course.

HT 503 CURSES AND COVENANTS IN AFRICAN PERCEPTIVES
This course shall review courses and covenants in African perceptive especially in West Africa. The two text books shall be the Holy Bible and a book written by Rev Prof Emma Onunuju entitled “CURSES the inherited debts from the fathers and their lands”.

HT 504 THE MINISTRY PROFILE OF REV PROF EMMA ONONUJU
This course shall examine the ministries of Rev Prof Emma Ononuju which include Redemption Campaigners mission, El Theological college, International institute of missions, El university of theology and seminary, El Emancipation ministry, global prayer link, compassionate women orphanage home, UjuGospel publications and others. This shall help students build strong visions.

HT 505 ANCESTRAL CULTS AND HERITAGES IN AFRICA
This course shall survey curses and evil heritages and all ancestral heritages at the neck of the Africans. The text books of this course shall be the Holy Bible, books written by Rev Prof Emma Ononuju entitled (a)Loose him and let him go (b)The root and foundation of family curses.

HT 285 THE CHRISTIAN MARXIST ENCOUNTER
A study of Christian concern for the world, Christian presences in the Marxist world and issues concerning the world wide encounter between the Christian faith and Marxism. One credit.

HT 286 HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN MISSION
A study of the spread of the Christian gospel and development of churches with special emphasis on Roman Catholic mission in the 16th century and the protestant mission in the 19th and 20th centuries.

HT 287 WORLD RELIGIONS
A study of the doctrines and practices of the major world religions of Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shinto in historical perspective. Methodologies in the study of religion, problems of the christian encounter with people of other faiths and missiiological implications are also examined and discussed.

HT 290 HISTORY OF RELIGIONS
A survey course constituting an introduction to the historical study of Buddhism, Islam and the historical study of Buddhism, Islam and native African religions. Special attention will be given to problems of theological understanding from the standpoint of Christian faith.

HT 291 MISSION AND EVANGELISM
Study of the biblical and theological bases for christian mission will be combined with special attention to contemporary problems and strategies. Principles and methods of evangelism will be carefully considered, with focus upon the local congregation as the base of operations.

HT 293 THIRD WORL THEOLOGIES
This course is designed to acquaint students with some of the basic issues of theological discussion in the so called third world. The procedure will be readings and class discussion of one book, attention also may be given to latin African liberation theology and or developments in African theology.

HT 303 CHRISTIANITY IN THE MODERN
A survey of the interaction of church and society with special reference to doctrinal formation and mission activity, from 1648 to the present. Major emphasis will be on experience in Europe and North Africa. (Required, middlers or seniors).

HT 314 THEOLOGY OF THE REFORMERS
A study of selected Lutheran, reformed and Anabaptist reformers, including Luthers, Melanchthon, Zwingli, and Calvin, and their continuing influence on the life and thought of the church.
HT 316 THEOLOGY OF LUTHER
Major motifs in Luther’s thought studied in primary sources and interpreted by modern Luther scholars.

HT 321 HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN THOUGHT
Studies in selected christian theologians from the fathers to the present. The course will survey the broad outlines of the development of christian thought, concentrating on decisive and seminal thinkers.

HT 324 LUTHERANS IN AFRICA
An in-depth study of Lutheran beginnings, with special focus on 19th and 20th century immigrants and their struggles toward unity in their new homeland.

HT 330 SEMINAR ON THE LATIN CHURCH FATHER
Selected writings from the latin church fathers of the first four centuries are studied.

HT 332 AFRICAN CIVIL RELIGION
An introduction to the concept of African civil religion and an assessment of that value system in relation to the gospel and the mission of the church.
HT 345 ECUMENICAL THEOLOGY
An introduction to the main currents in ecumenical theology in recent years, together with a survey of the literature which has emerged from bi-lateral, national, and international ecumenical dialogues, as well as materials from the faith and order commission of the world council of churches, especially the document, baptism Eucharist and ministry.

HT 350 THE JEWS AND JUDAISM
The history of Jewish religion, institutions, observances, theology, law and lore from the time of Abraham, concentrating on the period from the Roman Empire to the present.

HT 351 CREATION AND HOPE
The role of creation in our understanding of God, humankind, history and the world will be examined together with the eschatological and soteriological dimension of creation. The relation between a christian understanding of creation and ancient and modern cosmologies will be explored.

HT 114 THE FOCUS AND WORKS OF THE CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (CAN)
This course evaluates and comes out with the vision, focus and the activities with great concentration of the preservation of Christianity in Nigeria.

HT 115 HISTORY OF CHURCHES IN NIGERIA
The course that traces the origin, the spread and the emergencies of churches and denominations in Nigeria. This is a course that gives an accurate history of many denominations in Nigeria.

HT 116 ANGELOLOGY
This is the teachings and doctrines about the angels. The origin, names, offices, duties and ministries of the angels shall be fully surveyed and studied.

HT 117 TRINITOLOGY
This is the exposition of the Bible trinity and the emphasis of three person in one God head, the father, the son and the Holy ghost. This reveals the foundation of Christian faith.

HT 118 THE THEOLOGY OF THE CROSS
This is a Bible theology that traces the crucifixion of Jesus and the importance of the cross, together with the place of the cross in man’s redemption.

HT 119 THE MYSTRIES OF RESURRECTION
A course that treats the Christian perceptive of life after death, resurrection, rapture and judgment. This is a Biblical theology that emphasizes of christian resurrection.

HT 120 CHRISTIAN FIDELITY
This is a Bible theology that treat all about Christian faith, Christian doctrine and the total spirituality of the Christian believer.

HT 354 JESUS CHRIST TODAY: CONTEMPORARY CHRISTOLOGICAL THOUGHT
A variety of contemporary theological writers will be read to acquaint students with current expressions of Christology centering on the question: who is Jesus Christ today?

HT 359 WORD, FAITH AND HISTORY
The interrelationship between the word of God, God’s activity in history, and the response of faith will provide the context for interpreting the character of God’s revelation, the mode of God’s presence, the nature of scripture and Christian tradition and the dimensions of the human response.

HT 363 SEMINAR ON ANNUAL CONFERENC MEMBERSHIP
In-depth study and dialogue on the nature of membership in an annual conference of the church, with special reference to admission to the conference and ordination. (RCM Conference).

HT 367 CHRISTIAN PRAYER (MODULE)
The current misunderstanding of prayer, the biblical basis for prayer, the relation of biblical and mystical prayer, and prayer as dialogue. Attention will be given to spiritual writers in both Protestantism and Catholicism.

HT 368 THE CHURCH AND THE MEANS OF GRACE
The nature of the church, in the means that the Holy spirit employs in his work, the sacraments, and the church’s ministry of the word examined within the framework of the Lutheran focus on justification by grace through faith alone.

HT 369 CHRISTIAN SPRIITUALITY: MODELS OF DISCIPLESHIP
This course will examine the various ways in which Christian spirituality has been understood by examining the models of discipleship presented in classic Christian writers and movements.

HT 370 20TH CENTURY PROTESTANT THEOLOGY
A study and critical evaluation of 20th century theological thought examined from the work of theologians who never reached the prominence of the giants like Barth, Bultmann and Tillich, but who nevertheless made significant contributions to the theological developments of our time.

HT 371 ESSENTIALS OF EVANGELICAL THEOLOGY
A dialogue between the professor and students on the two-volume work on Essentials of Evangelical Theology. The student’s work will consist basically in drawing up questions for the professor and in dialoguing with the professor.
HT 372 THOUGHT OF SOREN KIERKEGAARD
A study of the basic works of Kierkgaard. Particular attention is given to his religious and Christian writings. An evaluation is made of his influence upon 20th century theology and philosophy.

HT 373 THEOLOGY OF KARL BARTH
Survey of the Barthian literature dogmatic exegetical, history of doctrine, political, homiletically and devotional: a digest of the contents of the 13 volume of the church dogmatic followed by the in-depth study of a selected volume of the dogmatic or a particular doctrine seminar.

HT 375 THEOLOGY OF CALVIN
An examination of the theory of John Calvin, as especially found in his institutes of the Christian religion. The implications of Calvin’s theology for parish life today will be a major goal of the course.

HT 376 PAUL TILLICH’S SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY
The basic theological philosophical roots of Tillich’s thought. Reading, analysis and discussion of the three volumes of the systematic theology to appropriate some of the intriguing thrusts of Tillich’s concern for the Christian message.

HT 377 STUDIES IN EVANGELICAL THEOLOGY
An in-depth study of the two-volume, essentials of evangelical theology. The student is given ample opportunity to enter into creative dialogue with the professor. The course consists of assignments and a final examination.

HT 378 READINGS IN GERMAN THEOLOGY
The writings of various contemporary German theologians will be read in the German language and discussed. The material read will vary from term to term, and the course may be repeated. The material to be covered will be announced each term.

HT 476 AFRICAN NATURE CHURCHES
This course examines African nature churches founded by the Africans, initiated by the Africans in African culture with the African ideology, with the Bible but interpreted in African theology.

HT 479 AFRICAN TRADITIONAL RELIGION
This course examines the African traditional religion founded by the fathers and founders of the African race. African traditional religion is as old as the flood of Noah Genesis chapters 8,9,10. This course shall examine greater forms of Animism in African traditional religion.

 

HT 456 AFRICAN TRADITIONAL THEOLOGY
This course shall examine the root and foundation of the African traditional theology and compare the same with Hindiusm, Budhiasm and other religions of the ancient East.

HT 454 AFRICAN TRADITIONAL PHILOSOPHY
This course examines the culture, idea, reasoning and the thought of the Africans concerning the general world view, the life or man’s existence in general.

HT 455 AFRICAN TRADITIONAL SOCIOLOGY
This course reveals and reviews the African traditional sociology, how the Africans see the society, work in community and what civilization is in the African society. This courses shall examine the African society in comparison with the African religious activities.

HT 378 MOLTMANN’S THEOLOGICAL WRITINGS
The concern will be to carefully analyze Moltmann’s treatment of the doctrine of God as Trinity, especially with a view to understanding it in the light of traditional doctrines concerning the trinity and appreciating the pastoral import of this doctrine.

HT 379 THEOLOGICAL OPTIONS TODAY
This course seeks to introduce the student to the leading contenders on the theological scene today including liberation theology, process theology, charismatic theology and evangelical theology.

HT 380 CHRISTIAN ETHICS
A study of the Christian moral life as an expression of christian faith. Particular attention is given to biblical ethics, ethical reflection in the reformation and Roman catholic traditions and to the evaluation of critical contemporary issues of moral decision making i.e. racism, nuclear power, economic justice, the environment etc.

HT 381 CHRISTIAN ETHICS
This course seeks to introduce the students to the major issues in theological ethics today: the relation of theological philosophical ethics, the two kingdoms, love and justice, law and gospel, an ethics of principles vs situation ethics, and the problem of war. Special attention will be given to the theology of liberation and in particular to the question of whether violence to achieve legitimate social goals can ever have the sanction of the church. The mission of the church will also be explored, and a new statement on the relation of evangelism and social will be presented.

HT 382 THE SOCIAL TEACHINGS OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCHES
Varieties of Christian social thought will be explored through studies of historic Christian views of such issues as war peace, politics, economics, social justice and social reform. Relevance for the present day will also be a focus.
HT 384 ECCLESIASTICAL MISSION POLICIES AND PRACTICES
The historical contribution of the modern missionary movement to the development of viable, indigenous and independent churches in the so called mission areas will be viewed from the standpoint of the mission policies and practices of various Lutheran and other denominational mission boards or divisions.

HT 387 SEMINAR ON HISTORY OF RELIGIONS
Selected studies aimed at historical and theological understanding of the major religions of the world. Prerequisite: at least one course of study in history of religions.

HT 391 STUDIES IN THIRD WORLD THEOLOGIES
Concentrated studies done on readings from original writings of third world theologies with special emphasis on the theology of advocacy for justice and peace.

HT 393 LIBERATION THEOLOGY
A research seminar viewing liberation theology as an ecumenical theology. The writings of Latin African and other theologians will be considered in terms of Marx’s influence; the hermeneutic circle; re-formulation of the doctrines of Christ, of sin and salvation, church and sacrament, mission and evangelism and eschatology.

HT 394 GLOBAL MINISTRY OF LUTHERAN CHURCHES
A study of the Lutheran presence in Asia, Africa and latin Africa with special emphasis on the Lutheran theology of mission, historical backgrounds and the present state of the Africa Lutheran church’s mission to the world.

HT 395 EASTERN RELIGIOUS CULTS
A study of the growing influence of oriental religious cults in the united states with an investigation of their historical origins, main doctrines, organizational structures and “mission” activities.

HT 396 PARAPSYCHOLOGY AND RELIGION
A study in the history of Christian spirituality, including the problems of miracles, religious experience and the gifts of the spirit. A major goal will be to develop proper criteria of evaluation to distinguish the authentic from the spurious in both religious experience and religious teaching. Noteworthy figures of the 20th century also be studied.

HT 397 CHRISTIAN APOLOGETICS
The course will explore resources for articulating the gospel in the light of changing views of the world in modern thought, and in the light of objections and alternatives to Christian faith. It will examine apologies for the faith in the history of Christian thought and the possibilities for a modern defense of the faith.

HT 414 AFRICAN TRADITIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
This course treats why the Africans do what they do, how the African achieve what they need the Africans systems of prayers and petitions and how the Africans see their deities and the God of heaven.

HT 417 AFRICAN TRADITIONAL ANTHROPOLOGY
This is the course that treats the African systems of existence, systems of activities, African various religions, African various beliefs, African peoples, behaviours and methods of advancement in connection with their religions, trades, occupations and civilizations.

HT 418 IGBO TRADITION RELIGION
Although, Igbo is in Africa and one of the major tribes in Nigeria, still with a different and definite religion from what are seen in other parts of Africa. Igbo traditional religions is Judaism seen among the Jews and founded by the Erites from the tribe of Gad who founded Igbo nation. This course shall be studied with the Bible and to compare it with the old testament laws.

HT 419 IGBO TRADITION OF POLITICS
This course examines how the igbo play their games,  how they organize their meetings, select their leaders, settle cases, appoint officers, schedule their programmes, achieve their goals and live in unity among themselves. This course shall compare the general igbo world view with the igbo religion.

HT 420 CHRISTIAN MISSIONARIES IN AFRICA
This course shall survey the ancient church history in Africa and the effects of Christianity in Africa. The course also shall examine how Africa accepted Christianity.

HT 398 THE GOSPEL AND IDEOLOGY
A critical analysis of how “sound” orthodox statements and positions of the church or individual Christians may be more ideological in import rather than proclamatory. An attempt will be made to grapple with this ambiguity, especially in relation to the preaching and advocacy ministries of the church.

HT 399 READINGS AND DIRECTED RESEARCH
Independent reading or a research project on some phase of history or theology with the approval and under the guidance of one of the instructors in the division.

HT 413 LUTHER AND THE FORMULA
A study of luther’s theology in comparison with in its influence upon the formula of concord, focusing on free will and predestination, law and gospel, faith and works, and justification.

HT 415 LUTHER’S THEOLOGY OF THE CROSS AND MARXISM
Luther’s theology of the cross will be explored in terms of its historical roots and in the light of the challenge that Marxism presents to Christian theology. Objectives of the course include: exploring the biblical foundation of luther’s theology of the cross and existential questions luther faced that led to his articulation f that theology, exploring marx’s concept of the human person and his theory of history as his peculiar atheistic Weltanschauung; reflecting on a contemporary formulation of a theology of the cross in the light of the challenge of marx’s weltanschauung.

HT 416 LUTHER’S THEOLOGY OF THE CROSS MARXISM
Intensive investigation of major themes in Melanchthon’s theology considered topically, focusing on justification, free will, predestination, baptism, the Eucharist and Christology.

HT 430 SEMINAR ON THE GREEK FATHERS
Selected readings and student reports on Greek patristic writers of the early church, such as first clement, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, the two Gregorys.

HT 451 THEOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY
Facets of the christian interpretation of God and human being will be examined in light of biblical and christian tradition and in light of modern perspectives on reality.

HT 455 THEOLOGY AND SCIENCE
A selected study of the way Christian theologians have responded to the modern scientific development. Beginning with a review of the major points of debate and discussion between science and theology since the enlightenment, the course seeks to lead to reflection and discussion of the contemporary situation.

HT 475 FROM MARTIN LUTHER TO MARTIN KAEHLER TO PAUL TILLICH
A historical/systematic study of the core of Lutheran theology from its foundation in Luther. Following a review of the historical development after Luther the course will focus on the creative contributions of Martin Kaehler in his teaching on biblical authority and the doctrine of justification. The course will conclude by analyzing the way luther’s emphasis on grace has come to expression in Tillich’s theology.

HT 480 THEOLOGY IN MULTI-CULTURAL CONTEXTS
A study of developments of theology in relations to culture with special emphasis on indigenous developments of theological systems in the third world. Open to graduate students and advanced undergraduates.

 

HT 481 THE CONCEPT OF THE POOR IN CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY
This research seminar will direct its attention to the place and importance of the “poor” in the history of the church. The special focus would be on the biblical witness and on the presence/absence of the concept of the poor in the writings of the fathers, Luther and the reformers, and in contemporary theology. The underlying hermeneutical principle would be the question of the poor as the locus of God’s presence in Jesus Christ in the world.

HT 491 THEOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT
Socio-economic and political development are acutely needed in the so-called third, fourth and fifth worlds. The strategies for development directly and indirectly challenge the church to rethink its mission. Themes of creation and salvation, doctrine of the two kingdoms and eschatology will be re-examined in the light of secular and “religious” programs for development.

HT 492 CORRELATION OF THEOLOGY AND PREACHING
Through the study of selected theologians and preachers it is hoped that the seminar will help the pastor to remain a permanent theological inquirer as well as a relevant and timely preacher.

Bible cosmology is the science of creation of the discourse of the universe. It is a course that treats the world, the universe of the earth on Biblical perceptive.

HT 228 BIBLE SPIRITUALITY
Bible spirituality is a Christian theology that teaches what the Bible calls spirituality, how spirituality is acquired and what Christian spirituality is all about.

HT 229 INTRODUCTION TO BIBLE GRACE
A course that differentiates the gospel from the law and differentiates O.T from N.T. with laudable emphasis on N.T. grace.

HT 495 BIBLICAL HERMENEUTICS AND THEOLOGY
This seminar will explore the intersection between biblical interpretation and theological thought, using the issues involved in interpreting particular biblical texts to address the hermeneutical question. The biblical material will vary from term to term, and the course may be repeated.

HT 496 BIBLICAL THEOLOGY AND THEOLOGY
This course will examine biblical theology and its significance for christian teaching from the standpoint of systematic theology. It will consider the importance of the canon and the structure of biblical theology of Christian thought, the issue of the relation of the parts to the whole, and the issue of how scripture helps us interpret our world and history in light of God’s presence in Jesus Christ.

HT 497 DOGMATICS AND THE STRUCTURE OF THEOLOGY
This research seminar will explore the role of dogmatics in theological thought, the relation between structure and content in theology, and the relation between dogmatics, biblical theology and contemporary thought.
