DEPARTMNET OF MINISTRY PARISH WORKS FOUNADTIONS OF CHRISTIAN WORSHIP

This course seeks to examine the historical roots of Christian worship and, with and understanding of these roots, to develop an understanding of worship and its theological and historical norms.

MN 103 PASTORAL PRACTICUM
A month-long contextual engagement in a parish setting under pastoral guidance. It is scheduled for the January interim and is ordinary.

MN 104 INTRODUCTORY PASTORAL SEMINAR
An initial discussion of images of ministry, piety and the student’s self understanding as these affect the student’s developing concept of the pastoral office. Class meets one and one-half hour per week.

MN 106 INTRODUCTION TO PARISH WORSHIP
An initial study of worship of Christian communities, its biblical, theological, anthropological and historical roots; the development of good pastoral leadership.

MN 107 ORAL INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURE
Intensive instruction and practice in speech, centering on reading scripture in the context of worship. Focus on technical aspects of speech, as well as interpretative techniques for orally communicating in the text’s meaning.

MN 110 INTRODUCTION TO HYMNOLOGY
This module is designed to introduce the student to hymns and their use in worship. An emphasis is placed upon the theology of the text and the marriage of tune to text.

MN 113 APPLIED ORGAN
Study of repertoire suitable for worship services. Service playing techniques will also be presented. For beginning or advanced students. M.A or M.Div. students may take for ½ hr. of credit per trimester for a maximum of 3 hours credit. Times to be arranged.

MN 130 PREFACE TO PREACHING
A pre-introduction on the basic principles of preaching, with emphasis upon scriptural interpretation and the sermon focus.

MN 140 FOUNDATIONS OF PREACHING
A study of the basic principles of preaching with particular emphasis upon the interpretation of scripture, its relevant applicant to life situations, and clear, orderly and interesting expression.

MN 160 PRACTICUM IN TEACHING MINISTRY
This module is intentionally practical. Skills essential to good teaching will be introduced and exercises designed to give proficiency in that skill practiced.

MN 171 FOUNDATIONS OF PASTORAL CARE
A study of the principles of care, and of human crises (developmental and situation) in order to develop an understanding of oneself as a caregiver and of pastoral care in the context of the total ministry of the church.

 

MN 173 INTRO TO CHURCH WEDDING
This is a course on the ethics and principles of the church wedding. Here exposes the duties of the pastor, those of the bride, those of the bridegroom and the church involvements.

MN 174 EQUIPING THE SAINTS
A course that treats spiritual materials to build and equip the believers for the task ahead which include prayers, devotion, dedication, self denial, scripture reading and evangelism in order to build the saints.

MN 176 CHRISTIAN FAMILY LIVING
Christian family living is a course that reveals great ingredients of family survival such as family prayers, family altar obedience and love of the couple, training of children and issues that shall keep the family growing.

MN 178 CHURCH ORDINANCES
Church ordinances include all rituals and rites in the church which include baptism, Holy Communion, commissioning, ordination, burial, child dedication, wedding and others. This lesson teaches their importance and significances.

MN 179 ECCLESIATICAL MANAGEMENT
This course is on new church management which is based on the Bible principles and Christian philosophy. This course shall help the student to discover all managerial qualities in him.

MN 180 HUSBANDRY
Husbandry is a ministerial dealing on caring, leading, protecting, feeding, guarding guiding and helping the flocks in the vine yard to survive and to grow. This is applicable to church members.

MN 172 FOUNDATIONS OF PASTORAL CARE
In this foundation course we will reflect theologically on the context, purpose and object of pastoral care. We will explore the areas of congregational life in which pastoral care can take place. We will consider techniques for caring for those persons who need help in handling crises and conflicts resulting from existential, developmental, interpersonal and/or social strain.

MN 175 ALCOHOL AND THE PEOPLE OF GOD
An introduction to the symptoms of alcoholism, its effect on families, recovery programs and the work of the pastor and the church in helping with what George Gallup Jr calls, “The Nations No. 1 Health problem”.

 

MN 201 PRESIDING IN WORSHIP
Students work on developing their liturgical leadership by making personal connections between theory and practice. Using videotaping as a tool for critical analysis, the class will focus on word/action interplay in leading worship.

MN 203 CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP PATTERNS
This course will seek to acquaint the student with available worship resources from various united Methodist) to give assistance in evaluating such resources and to provide background for utilizing and creating resources for the worship of the church.

MN 206 THE FUNERAL RITE
The purpose of this module is to help prepare the student to minister to the needs of the community of faith at the time of death.

MN 207 WORSHIP IN REFORMATION TRADITIONS
A study of the origins, history and theology of seven protestant liturgical traditions: Lutheran, reformed, Anglican, free church, Methodist, Quaker, and Pentecostal.

MN 210 HYMNOLOGY
The use of hymns in worship and their historic development. The analysis of representative hymns from early church, the Reformation, the Reformed Psalter, the oxford movement, the gospel hymn and the contemporary scene.

MN 212 CHANTING
The objectives of this are: to learn to chant the services in the Lutheran Book of worship, to become familiar with the various chanting traditions in the Western church, including psalmody; to understand the role and function of chanting in worship.

MN 216 ART AND ARCHITECTURE IN CHRISTIAN WORSHIP
A study of church architecture, painting, the plastic arts, textiles, calligraphy and related liturgical arts in the service of Christian worship. Frequent field trips to churches, chapels, convents and monasteries.

MN 218 MEDIA AND MINISTRY
This course reflects on the effects of various media on the shape, thinking and theology of individuals, society, and the church. While special emphasis is placed upon video and computers; print, photography, and other media are examined as well. Readings, viewings, structured activities, and hands-on work employed in the course.

MN 221 THEOLOGY AND MODERN LITERATURE
A limited enrollment seminar that will discuss the work of three or four seminal, modern authors and will, in addition, discuss the importance of literature for preaching, liturgy and pastoral care.
MN 230 INTRODUCTION TO PREACHING
A study of the theory and theology of proclamation, principles and techniques of preaching with special attention to sermon preparation and delivery. (Required, middlers)

MN 235 EVANGELISM
A course built on the Evangel for everyone evangelism program, designated to study the theology of Christian witness in connection with the actual practice of evangelism. One credit.

MN 240 SERMON, PREPARATION AND ANALYSIS
This course is designed to build upon and supplement, “Foundations of Preaching”, by putting into actual use the theory and tools acquired. The student will prepare sermons and series of sermons covering the general range of structural styles and the changing emphasis of the Christian year. These sermons will be evaluated and discussed. Depending upon the limitations imposed by class size, each student will deliver one or more sermons for class discussion.

MN 181 FLOCK DOMESTICATION
Flock domestication is a ministerial course dealing on how to protect, train, guide, equip, feed and keep the flocks to be homely, friendly, useful and serviceable. This course is also applicable to church members who are referred as the flocks of God.

MN 182 MINISTRY TO PEGANS
A course designed to help the students to reach pagan communities with evangelism, soul winning activities and mission outreach. This course shall open the eyes of the student to discover the unchurched areas of the world.

MN 183 LOVE FEAST
Love feast is a course designed to help believers to discover the importance of love, the need of sharing together and the act of giving and supporting others, especially the poor and the needy.

MN 184 COUNSELING MINISTRY
This is a course designed to equip the student on how to help the weak, the sick, the sinner, the troubled heart and the oppressed to his or her normal heart condition and to bring such one in a good relationship with God.

MN 185 BIBLICAL PREACHING
Biblical preaching is a pulpit course that help the gospel minister to understand what to preach, how to preach, why preaching and when to preach in order to catch the audience.

MN 186 BIBLICAL TEACHING
Biblical teaching is a pulpit course that unveils and helps the gospel minister to understand how to teach, what to teach, where to teach and the total purpose of the Biblical teaching in order to win the audience.

MN 249 CROSS CULTURAL MINISTRIES
This course acquaints students with a culture other than their own and relates the justice issues which affect that particular minority group. A specific method for cross-cultural ministry will be shared so that students will have some foundations upon which to build a cross-cultural ministry in the future.

MN 250 EDUCATIONAL MINISTRY
A study of the pastor as teacher and the theological task of education in the christian learning community. Students are given opportunity to experience the variety of ways people learn and to develop leadership skills in the teaching ministry of the church.

MN 251 FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATIONAL MINISTRY
An exploration of the Christian education ministry in the parish and of the skills required of the pastor as teacher.

MN 253 UNITED METHODIST STUDIES POLITY
A study of the book of discipline of the united Methodist church with special attention to the united Methodist polity in theory and practice.

MN 254 THE TEACHING TASK
A module to strengthen precise skills of teachings: introduction, presentation, clarification and summarization. Students will prepare micro teaching units and teach them in class, using videotape for peer evaluation.

MN 259 FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT IN CHURCH
Financial management in church is significantly different because many churches receive financial aid, pastors salaries are paid from different than in a non-Indian church. This module will begin to deal with financial management within the context of the Indian church. One credit.

MN 261 PASTORAL ADMINISTRATION
Concerns conceptual tools and leadership skills for the minister as parish administrator. The course deals with such subjects as planning, goal setting, conflict management, supervision of volunteers and time management.

MN 262 CONFIRMATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY
A study of the characteristics of youth and an exploration of the historical view of confirmation in the church. The class will read, discuss and engage in experiential learning activities to develop skills and confidence for educational ministry among youth.

MN 266 FEMINIST THEOLOGY AND MINISTRY
An exploration of the field of feminist theology today, as it relates to society and to predominate theologies of the church. Students will reflect on their identity as ministers and on the contributions of feminist theology to the ministry of the church.

MN 270 INTRODUCTORY CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
A four-week clinical introduction to ministry to persons in crisis, supervised by an approved chaplain.

MN 271 THE PASTORAL MINISTRY
This course will investigate the nature and function of the pastoral ministry. Consideration will be given to the minister as preacher, leader of worship, pastor, administrator, etc. some research will be made into pastoral strategy in facing a secular and pluralistic society.

MN 275 LOSS AND GRIEF
An examination of the dynamics of loss and grief from a pastoral theological perspective, with special attention to the meaning of death in human life.

MN 276 DEATH, CONFLICT AND SUFFERING
An encounter with case situations and personal reactions of students as they face critical situations in their ministries. Implications of these crises for counseling.

MN 187 BIBLICAL PROPHECY
This course outlines all fake and false prophecies as were revealed in the Bible and show clearly what the word “BIBLICAL PROPHECY” means according to the scriptural truth.

MN 188 BIBLICAL HEALING
Biblical healing is a course that encourages the gift of healing and explains the importance of such gift and how to acquire such gift to the glory of God.

MN 189 BIBLICAL DELIVERANCE
This is the course that teaches the principles, ethics and total deliverance which is one of the major ministries of JESUS which is today needed in our days.

MN 190 BREAKING OF CURSES
General curses can be broken by total obedience to God and by destroying the causes of such curses. This course deals on how to break curses in the family, in the kindred or in an individual.
MN 191 BREAKING OF COVENANTS
Covenants are agreements with someone but this course is referring to evil covenants with the demons. This course shows Biblical revelation on how to break the covenants.

MN 192 LAND LIBERATION
Land liberation is a geographical deliverance made in a cursed land or in a polluted village. This course teaches the mood, mode and principles of deliverance.

MN 193 ETHICS OF FAMILY DELIVERANCE
A course that reveals how to conduct family deliverance and how to break family courses. This is a charismatic course.

MN 278 MINISTRY IN A TIME OF DEPRESSION AND BURNOUT
Depression and burnout have become epidemic during the 1980’s. this module examines the factors that cause these times to be depression producing, and considers implications for the effective proclamation of the gospel and doing of pastoral care.

MN 280 CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION
A 12-week summer program conducted in appropriate centers under the supervision of a chaplain supervisor accredited by the association for clinical pastoral education.

MN 281 THE PASTOR AS SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR
Designed to enable the students to consider and reflect upon their function as pastor theologian in relation to the spiritual growth and emotional development of the people they are called to serve.

MN 285 PASTORAL PRACTICUM
This is a 10 week long contextual engagement in church in a parish setting under pastoral guidance. It is scheduled for the and is open to any student.

MN 289 HUMAN SEXUALITY AND THE CHURCH
An examination of human sexuality, the church and sexuality, the relationship between the theology and sexuality, sexual ethics, sex roles, and homosexuality.

MN 304 WORSHIP AND RELIGIOUS IMAGINATION
Students will read selected fiction and poetry in order to explore how creativity and imagination play a role in human perceptions of the world and God. Special attention will be given to how worship as “play” both informs and expresses faith.

MN 305 THEOLOGY AND SPIRITUALITY OF THE PASTORAL OFFICE
A careful study of the nature of ordained pastoral ministry and the spirituality which may undergird it, with critical attention to the biblical material relevant to ministry, anthropological  studies of religious leadership, the theology of office and ordination, the liturgical and spiritual role of the pastor and the image of pastoral ministry in some contemporary fiction.

MN 306 LITURGY AND ECCLESIOLOGY
An analysis of the relationship of liturgical tradition and concepts of church as these shape Christian identity. Specific attention will be paid to the connections between belonging (rites of initiation) and ordering (rites of ordination).

MN 308 PERSPECTIVES ON PRAYER
A comprehensive investigation of the phenomenon of prayer in the Judaeo Christian and other selected religious traditions.

MN 338 PREACHING IN WORSHIP
The structure and content of the sermon is explored in light of the structure and content of analysis is on the sermon as a process in time rather than object in space, using insights drawn from literary theory.

MN 340 FROM TEXT TO SERMON
Since effective preaching requires accurate exegesis, both of the sermon’s text and of the sermon’s hearers and their situation, this module will explore the place at   which these two kinds of exegesis intersect.

MN 341 MASTER PREACHERS
One of the ways to study homiletics is to study it as an art. This course will study the preaching of those who have been especially noted in the fine art of preaching. Those chosen for study will be representative masters from differing ages and traditions.

MN 343 PREACHING FROM ST. JOHN
An analysis of the various themes and motifs of the fourth gospel for the purpose of homiletics. The student will be introduced to the many exciting preaching possibilities in this book. The latest commentaries and books in the Johannine field will be used.

MN 345 SPECIAL TOPICS IN PREACHING
An examination of a variety of topics relevant to effective preaching: the nature of creativity; how to make verbal communication more interesting and understandable, how and personal significance create unique opportunities and obstacles for the proclamation and hearing of the gospel.

MN 348 ADVANCED PREACHING SEMINAR
This course will build upon prior preaching experience by providing practice in preaching with special emphasis upon exegetical accuracy, sermon content, structure and delivery.

MN 350 CHURCH ADMINISTRATION
A study of the concept of ministry as it pertains to administration, particularly in the parish. A focus on spirituality, hospitality and ecclesiology in an attempt to integrate theology with issues of leadership in public ministry.
MN 194 SIGNIFICANCE OF FAMILY ALTAR
A course that reveals the significance and the need of family altar which is fully referred as the home church or the first church of the couples.

MN 195 ORPHANAGE MINISTRY
This course refers the significance and merciful activities of orphanage homes and encourages the need of such ministry for the salvation of the orphans and all abandoned children.

MN 196 THE HISTORY OF COMPASSIONATE WOMAN ORPHANAGE HOME
Compassionate woman orphanage home is one of the leading orphanage homes in Nigeria. This course shall treat the history, exploits and merciful works of this ministry founded by Rev DR (Mrs.) Alice Zuriel Ononuju.

MN 197 OUTREACH MINISTRY

MN 198 MOBILE MINISTRY

MN 229 YOUTH FELLOWSHIP

MN 241 MEN’S FELLOWSHIP
Men’s fellowship as an academic course is a means through which the church can grow and reach out through direct equipment of make adult in the local church.

MN 242 WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP
This features the functions of the women’s fellowship in the local church, the purpose women’s fellowship and how to use the converted women in the church to reach the unconverted women in the world.

MN 243 CHRISTIAN MATURITY

MN 351 THE PASTOR’S MINISTRY WITH CHILDREN

MN 358 THE MINISTRY OF THE WHOLE PEOPLE OF GOD
A study of the partnership of ministry of all believers, and the pastor’s role in equipping and encouraging the people for their ministry in the church and in the world. An advanced education and administration course.

MN 361 EDUCATIONAL MINISTRY IN THE ADULT LIFE CYCLE
A study of faith development in the adult and characteristics of the adult learner. Students will explore a variety of adult educational methodologies and have the opportunity of developing a comprehensive parish program of adult education.

MN 362 EXPLORATIONS IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: CURRICULUM DESIGN EVALUATION AND USE
Exploration of the facts involved in the designing and selection of written curricula; opportunity to become familiar with and evaluate current denominational and non-denominational curricula; how to assist teachers and leaders to use them creatively.

MN 363 THE BIBLE IN CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
This course will explore the relation between the academic study of the Bible and its use in educational ministry with children, youth and adults and include  the critical examination of the use of the Bible in current curriculum resources. Participants will experiment with different ways of studying the Bible to bring about active exploration for the discovery of meaning, and create materials of their own that could be used in the teaching of the Bible.

MN 365 TEACHER TRAINING IN THE PARISH
A course to study the needs of volunteer teachers in the congregation and to further develop our own teaching skills. Students will review resources, study approaches and develop a program for ongoing teacher recruitment, training and support.

MN 367 THE COMMUNITY OF WOMEN AND MEN IN THE CHURCH
A module designed to consider the theological, social and personal concerns of and for women and men in church and society. The objective is to enhance our awareness of the barriers to, and the gifts for, full participation by both women and men in church and society.

MN 370 INTERNSHIP
A full year of intensive involvement for the M.Div. student in responsible, pastoral ministry under the supervision of an experienced pastor and the seminary. It normally follows successful completion of a student’s second year of academic work. All internships are assigned by the faculty upon recommendation of the student/faculty internship committee and the director of internship.

MN 371 PASTORAL COUNSELING IN THE PARISH
Designed to enable students to develop their own approach to pastoral counseling in the church through personal exploration and critical examination of various therapeutic methodologies in the light of theology.

MN 372 PASTORAL CARE OF FAMILIES
A reconsideration of family life in the context of parish ministry. Special attention is given to new understandings and problems in family living, and to resultant demands and opportunities for pastoral care in this context.

MN 374 INTRODUCTION TO MARRIAGE COUNSELING
This course focuses on current concepts and techniques in the field of marriage counseling. Emphasis will be placed on socio-cultural variations, diagnostic frameworks and evaluative techniques.

MN 375 THE SELF IN MARRIAGE
An exploration into the dynamics of low self esteem and its effect on mate selection and in how couples handle differentness and disagreements.

MN 376 COMMUNICATION AND MARITAL INTERACTION
An examination of the communicative patterns of couple interaction and their impact on the husband wife relationship.

MN 378 TECHNIQUES FOR THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTION
Designed to enable the students to consider a selected number of techniques for therapeutic intervention, and engage in the practice of these techniques on a limited basis. (Prerequisites: foundations of pastoral care).

MN 379 INTRODUCTION TO FAMILY THERAPY
The course will focus on current concepts and techniques in the field of family counseling. Units included are: an intensive focus on the concept of the family as a system; an exploration of the phases of the family life cycle, focusing on primary family functions and tasks; an examination of three broad family treatment strategies and their applications in various situations; and a study of families in counseling through the use of films of families in treatment.

MN 380 THE MINISTER AS INTERPRETER: AN INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR
Designed to provide an opportunity for senior to:

1. Examine their own interpretative style
2. Understand more clearly meanings of interpretation and
3. Explore the various ways in which the minister functions as interpreter.

MN 381 PASTORAL THEOLOGY METHOD
Required, senior focus week.

MN 387 CRISIS INTERVENTION FOR THE PASTOR
A focus on how the pastor can effectively respond to people experiencing the stress of alcoholism, chronic physical illness, suicide, death, delinquency, mental illness/retardation, marital crisis or a divorce crisis.

MN 388 CREATIVE CONFLICT RESOLUTION
An experiential opportunity for learning about the sources of an responses to conflict and an examination of ways of coping with conflicts in the parish.

MN 390 LEADERSHIP STYLES OF CLERGY
Examination of traits of leadership; leadership styles group interaction skills, motivational techniques, application of leadership skills to the development of staff potential in “solo” pastorates and in multiple staff relationships in the parish setting.

MN 399 READINGS AND DIRECTED RESEARCH
Independent reading or a research project on some phase of preaching, Christian education, pastoral theology, pastoral counseling or church music with the approval and under the guidance of one of the instructors in the division.

MN 402 THEOLOGIES OF WORSHIP
A study of the principles of critical liturgical theology and a survey of several theologies of worship or systematic theologies written from the point of view of the liturgical assembly.

MN 438 PARISH MINISTRY
An interdisciplinary study of the theological and sociological dimensions of the civil religion of the age and culture. Designed to develop a deeper concept of the church and viable ministry approaches in today’s society.

MN 458 THEOLOGY OF METHODOLOGY
An exploration of the theological bases of the education methods and leadership styles we employ in ministry with the goal of developing models of ministry which contextualize a theology of grace.

MN 470 SEMINAR IN MARRIAGE COUNSELING
This seminar is designed to provide a context in which clergy can examine their pastoral care situations with specific focus on their ministry to parish marriages and families.

MN 473 PASTORAL CARE AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
An examination of the similarities and differences of the developmental stages of men and women, as well as the various stages of development that families experience so that pastoral care with all people may be enhanced.

MN 477 SEMINAR IN PASTORAL THEOLOGY
The task of pastoral theology is to consider how the various aspects of ministry interact in a coherent whole. Readings in the early church fathers through the present debates about practical theology are considered.

MN 486 THEOLOGY AND PSYCHOLOGY: THE ONGOING DIALOGUE
This course looks at new approaches in the behavioural sciences to investigating and understanding human nature. It seeks to bring these understandings and methods into dialogue with biblical theology. Particular notice is taken of recent developments in cognitive psychology, and in the biological bases of human behavior.

MN 491 MIN., INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR
The seminar functions to assist participants in the integration of their ministerial roles into coherent patterns, to develop and execute individual learning contracts, to consider issues of general interest and concern for ministry, and to provide peer group support and evaluation of progress through the D.Min. program. This is a two-hour course, probably meeting off campus.

DM 411 RELIGIOUS INQUIRY
The first D.Min. week. This class introduces the participant to the expectations and methodologies of the D.Min program as a process of personal and professional growth. A special concern is the development of skills related to religious and practical theology.

DM 412 AGENDA FOR THEOLOGY AND MINISTRY
The second D.Min week. The purpose of the course is to enhance the theological self consciousness of candidates for the D.Min degree through the process of theological reflection on ministry and the development of skills of expression.

DM 413 D.MIN CANDIDATES SEMINAR
The third D.Min. week. This seminar is a setting for conversations between advanced D.Min students and faculty on important issues of theology and ministry.

DM 421 INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR I
This first course in the basic seminar sequence of the D.Min program focuses on the ministry as vocation.

 

 

DM 422 INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR II
This second semester course of the D.Min program focuses on structured observation in ministry.

DM 423 INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR III
The third semester’s integrative seminar concentrates on the theological consideration of the church and its ministry.

DM 424 INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR IV
The study in the fourth semester of the integrative seminar is in practical theology.

DM 495 MAJOR PROJECT/DISQUISITION FOR D.MIN
Completion of a supervised project in ministry that demonstrates the ability of the student to apply cumulative experience and theoretical knowledge to a specific concern in ministry. Its formal written presentation is called a disquisition.
